The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) was founded in 1967 and, ever since, they’ve remained devoted to the restoration and protection of the Chesapeake Bay.
Reilly Sweeping is a proud participating member of various organizations, one of which being the CBF, where together we work hard to save the Bay.
In time for Earth Day on Saturday, April 22, consider the many ways you can save the bay, whether that be from the comfort of your own home or in your yard.
Below are some tips to help you get started!
Buy local foods
Purchasing food that’s grown on local farms minimizes transportation-related emissions. It also keeps local farmers in business, which is ultimately good for the Bay.
Other than auto emissions, coal-burning power plants are among the largest sources of mercury and nitrogen compounds in air pollution.
Properly dispose of hazardous household items
Oils, paint, cleaners, and prescription drugs should not be poured down a household or storm drain.
Air pollution contributes more than one-third of all the nitrogen entering the Bay, and a large part of that is from vehicle exhaust.
In Your Yard:
Plant a tree
Trees hold soil in place with their roots, preventing erosion that runs into the Bay. They soak up fertilizers and other chemicals before they seep into waterways.
Avoid pouring toxic substances down storm drains
Don’t dump hazardous materials, such as solvents, paints, and preservatives. They go directly into streams and waterways and pollute the Bay.
Reduce or eliminate use of chemical herbicides and pesticides
They go directly into streams and waterways and pollute the Bay.
Reilly Sweeping works hard to conserve the environment in all of our locations. We understand the importance of saving the Chesapeake Bay and you could have a profound impact on the health of the Bay just with these practices!
